The History of the Den Gamle Digegaard

The old Digegaard was rebuilt after the storm surge in 1872, but is believed to have been built for the first time around the 1600s.

During that stormy flood in 1872, many people perished with their livestock, and most stood without any home.

Digegaarden’s widowed wife with 7 children survived, but only the bare timber frame of the house and some roofs were left of Digegaarden.

In 1874, Digegaarden was rebuilt with two more houses, and a farmer and his son, started using the place as a farm with agriculture and cattle.

Later, the land around the farm was subdivided into cottage plots.

  • In 1972, the previous owners Ulla and Knud Erik Nielsen bought the old farm. The digegaarden was thoroughly restored.
  • In 1974, Digegaarden was transformed into a cozy coffee house with home-baked cakes and later a restaurant called Den gamle Digegaard. The name comes from an old legend about a former dike(dige) bailiff who lived on the farm(gaard)( Digegaard(Dikefarm).
  • In 1976, Digegaarden was expanded with a third length of 110sqm, which was first used as a party room and later holiday apartments.
  • In the winter war of 1979, the current owner Johanne Nielsen was born during a violent snowstorm, the snow then reached all the way up to the roof.
  • In 1987, the 4th house addition was built for Digegaarden in the form of a party hall, so that Digegaarden could hold up to several parties at once.
  • In 1989, the old house was transformed and designed into a cozy farming cottage, with low ceilings and antique charm
  • In 2010, 3 luxury cottages were built next to the Digegaarden itself just behind the dike.

It is now a four-lane farm with hotel & restaurant as well as the ideal place for parties of any kind up to 85 people with the possibility of accommodation for up to 50 people.

In 2000, Den gamle Digegaard was taken over by the next generation Johanne Nielsen with family.
